According to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Mopa's international airport's first phase on December 11. Costing a whopping Rs 2,870 crore, this airport will join Dabolim as the state's second major airport.
Mopa Airport in North Goa, being built on 2,312 acres, has a capacity of 44 lakh passengers per year after the first phase is finished and one crore once it is fully operational. Whereas the current Dabolim airport can accommodate 85 lakh passengers per year, it lacks the cargo transportation option offered by the new airport.
Mopa Airport will ease pressure on the current Dabolim International Airport, which shares its facilities with the Indian Navy, limiting commercial operating hours and causing airside congestion during peak hours.
How to reach Mopa airport
The project's location is in the Pernem taluka of North Goa. The airport will be accessed through NH-166S, a six-lane road that will branch off NH-66 (former NH-17) in Dhargalim village via a trumpet interchange. A toll plaza with 6+6 lanes will also be built.
Design & Architecture
During peak hours, the airport will include a single passenger terminal building that spans over 700,000 feet and has the ability to handle about 1,000 incoming and departing passengers per hour.

Airside facilities
The airport will have a single runway (09/27) that is 3,750m long and 60m wide. The runway has been designed to handle a Boeing 777-200. Two speedy escape routes will be linked with taxiways on the runway. The taxiway will be 3,750 metres long and 25 metres wide.
The first phase of development also involves the building of a 114,000m2 commercial aircraft parking apron. Remote aircraft stands, service roads, and aircraft maintenance technical kits will be installed on the apron. The cargo apron will be designed to accommodate a freighter aircraft and will be supplied by ramp trucks to allow for speedy cargo unloading.
Two hangars will be erected on a 2,500m2 plot of land for general aviation use. A tower for air traffic control (ATC) will be erected next to the cargo area.
