St. Francis Xavier is considered the Patron of Goa. The Novena to St. Francis Xavier is held every year from November 25th to December 2nd and is attended by thousands of people, including people from other faiths, from different states across India and countries across the world. During the Exposition, special masses will be held at the Sé Catedral and Basilica of Bom Jesus.
The St. Francis Xavier Exposition is a significant event held at the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa. It celebrates the life and legacy of St. Francis Xavier, featuring cultural programs, historical displays, and various religious activities. This exposition attracts many visitors and devotees, offering a unique opportunity to learn about the rich heritage and traditions associated with St. Francis Xavier.
The St. Francis Xavier Exposition features daily masses in Konkani at various times throughout the day. Devotees can attend at 6:00 am, 7:15 am, 8:30 am, 9:45 am, 11:00 am, 3:30 pm, 5:00 pm, and 6:15 pm in English. This flexible schedule allows everyone to participate in spiritual gatherings at their convenience, fostering a strong sense of community and devotion during this important event.
During the Feast Day, special masses are held to honor St. Francis Xavier. The Konkani masses take place at 3:45 am, 5:00 am, 6:00 am, 7:15 am, 8:30 am, and 10:30 am (High Mass in English). Additionally, there are services at 12:15 pm, 3:30 pm, 5:00 pm, and 6:15 pm in English. These masses attract large crowds, celebrating the rich legacy and teachings of St. Francis Xavier with fervent prayers and hymns that resonate throughout the community.
On 23 November, after the 6:15 pm Mass, a special event called Maddi will take place. This gathering is a significant aspect of the celebration, as it brings community members together to honor the rich traditions associated with St. Francis Xavier's life and contributions. The event fosters a spirit of unity and reflection, allowing attendees to connect with the cultural and spiritual heritage surrounding this revered figure.
As part of the Exposition, various Language Masses will be held to cater to the diverse congregation. On 24 November, a Tamil Mass will occur at 11:00 am, followed by a Malayalam Mass at 12:15 pm and a Hindi Mass at 2:00 pm. Additionally, a French Mass is scheduled for 26 November at 2:00 pm. On 1 December, a Portuguese Mass will be held at 11:00 am, and a Kannada Mass will take place on 2 December at the same time. These language-specific services provide an inclusive space for individuals from different backgrounds to participate meaningfully in the festivities.
Several Special Masses are organized during the Exposition to commemorate significant events and figures. On 21 November, the Inaugural Mass at 9:30 am will be followed by a procession. The CCBI Pastoral Plan 2024-2033 will be inaugurated on 24 November at 3:30 pm. Other notable celebrations include the Feast of St. Catherine of Alexandria on 25 November, an Inter-Religious Meet on 28 November, and a Mass for Consecrated Men on 30 November. Additionally, the Apostolic Nuncio will preside over a Mass on 4 December at 8:30 am. The culmination of the celebrations will feature a Christmas Midnight Mass on 24 December and a Closing Ceremony with a Prayer, Procession, and Mass on 5 January 2025 at 9:30 am.
Confessions will be available during the Exposition to provide spiritual cleansing and preparation for the masses. Morning confessions are scheduled from 5:30 am to 12 noon, while evening confessions will be held from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. This opportunity for confession allows the faithful to engage more deeply with their spirituality during this sacred time.
The Deanery Pilgrimage Masses are scheduled across various locations, starting from 25 November. On this day, masses will take place in Panjim at 8:30 am and Canacona at 5:00 pm. The following days will see masses in Mormugoa, Bicholim, and Chinchinim, along with several other locations leading up to 30 November. These pilgrimage masses foster a sense of unity among the parishes and offer attendees a chance to participate in the larger community.
Please note that there will be no masses on 25 November at 11:00 am and on 28 November at 9:45 am and 11:00 am. These adjustments in the schedule ensure that community members are aware of specific changes during the Exposition. It is important for devotees to plan their attendance accordingly and ensure they do not miss any significant events. Keeping informed about the mass schedule enhances the overall experience of the Exposition and allows everyone to participate fully in the celebrations.
From 4 December onwards, parish pilgrimages will be held every weekday at 6:00 am, 7:15 am, 8:30 am, 9:45 am, 11:00 am, and 5:00 pm. These pilgrimages offer a spiritual journey for participants, reinforcing the teachings and values of St. Francis Xavier. Each pilgrimage presents an opportunity for reflection and community bonding, as participants walk together in faith, sharing stories and experiences that strengthen their connection to the saint and to one another.
On 2 December, a special Out of Goa Pilgrims Mass will be celebrated at 12:15 pm. This mass allows those who have traveled from outside Goa to participate in the Exposition and engage with the local community. It is a wonderful opportunity for pilgrims to connect with their faith and experience the rich traditions of Goa. Welcoming those from different regions fosters a sense of unity and shared devotion, making the Exposition an inclusive event for everyone involved.
The Mass of Mission of Daman is scheduled for 1 December at 12:15 pm. This mass highlights the significance of missionary work and the impact of St. Francis Xavier's legacy in the region. Attendees can expect to reflect on the importance of spreading faith and values as exemplified by the saint. The event serves as a reminder of the ongoing mission work inspired by St. Francis Xavier and encourages individuals to engage in similar endeavors in their own communities.
Starting from 24 November, Diocesan Bodies Masses will be held every weekday at 3:30 pm. These masses bring together various diocesan groups and organizations to pray and collaborate in their shared mission. Participants will engage in communal worship, fostering a spirit of cooperation and unity among the different bodies within the diocese. This collaborative effort highlights the diverse roles played by these groups in promoting faith and service in the community.
During the Exposition, there will be Veneration of the Sacred Relics from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. This time allows the faithful to pay their respects and seek the intercession of St. Francis Xavier, deepening their spiritual connection with the saint. The veneration of relics is a cherished tradition that helps participants feel closer to their faith and to the historical significance of St. Francis Xavier's contributions to the Church. Engaging in this practice can bring comfort and inspiration, enriching the spiritual experience of all attendees.
